Born July 16, 1964 in Wisconsin, Hellmuth was the first of five children and went to school at the University of Wisconsin. Hellmuth first achieved attention and fame through his accomplishments in MTT poker, but nothing keeps him in the limelight more than his reputation for outbursts and tirades at the tables. It’s clear he thinks incredibly highly of himself, and nothing upsets him more than a couple bad beats. He’s known to yell and scream at those that bad beat him, questioning their intelligence and ability to play the game. He even received a penalty from the floor in the 2008 WSOP because he kept harassing someone after he showed the table that he’d caused Hellmuth to fold a hand preflop with suited rags. His multiple tantrums and overreactions over the years have earned him the honor of being called “The Poker Brat”.
It looks like Hellmuth is making good use of his unique nickname, however. He currently has a clothing and merchandise line at www.PokerBrat.com, and you can buy a book that he wrote titled, you guessed it, Poker Brat. It’s to be expected that he’s made instructional DVDs, but you might be surprised to find out that he also helped make a mobile phone poker game. He writes a newspaper column called “Hand of the Week” about interesting poker hands, and he writes in blogs for both UB and CardPlayer. Add all his TV appearances and coaching opportunities, and it’s clear that Hellmuth has a busy poker life outside of the tables.
